Language & Terminology
Words matter. The language we use shapes how we understand and respond to intimate image abuse. This guide explains our terminology choices and why they're important.
Victim/Survivors
We use "victim/survivors" to acknowledge both the harm experienced and the resilience of those affected. This dual term respects individual preferences and recognizes different stages of recovery.
We avoid using only "victim" or only "survivor" as individuals may identify with either or both terms at different times.
Intimate Image Abuse
We say "intimate image abuse" instead of "revenge porn" because it accurately describes the harm without implying consent or pornography. It centres the abusive nature of sharing images without consent.
NOT "revenge porn" – this term is stigmatizing and inaccurate.
Perpetrators
We refer to those who commit intimate image abuse as "perpetrators" to clearly identify the source of harm and assign accountability. This language centres responsibility on those who cause harm, not those who experience it.
Using clear language about perpetrators helps shift blame away from victim/survivors.
Adults (18+)
Our services are specifically designed for adults aged 18 and over. We clearly define "adult" as 18+ to ensure appropriate service provision and to distinguish from services for children and young people.
Note: Different organisations serve different age groups with specialised support.
"Intimate" Images
We use the term "intimate" rather than "sexual," "naked," or "nude" because it's broader and less stigmatizing. Intimate images can include private moments that aren't necessarily sexual but were meant to remain private.
NOT "sexual images," "naked images," or "nude images" – these terms are limiting and can increase stigma.
Important Distinctions
Survivor-Informed, Not Survivor-Led
We are NOT a survivor-led organisation. However, we aim to be survivor-informed, meaning we actively engage with and learn from victim/survivors to shape our services, research, and advocacy. We collaborate closely with those who have lived experience while maintaining organisational independence.
StopNCII.org: A Tool, Not a Support Service
StopNCII.org is a TOOL, not a support service. It is a technological platform that helps prevent the sharing of intimate images without consent. For emotional support, counselling, or guidance, victim/survivors should contact dedicated support services like the Revenge Porn Helpline or other specialist organisations.
